The apex northern socio-cultural group, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has again lashes out at the members of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in the South-East and South-South states for agitating for a Biafra Republic, as they ignore to talk on the killings of Muslim shites in the northern part of the country
The Group expressed sadness and disappointment over the continued spate of protests by the members of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in the South-East and South-South states agitating for a Biafra Republic, stressing that their agitation is a futile one.
This was contained in a statement issued by the forum’s national publicity secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim at the end of the forum’s National Executive Council (NEC) quarterly meeting held in Kaduna and presided over by the deputy chairman, NEC, Alhaji Liman Musa Kwande, Baraden Lafia who stood in for the NEC chairman, IGP Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmadu Coomassie (rtd).
According to the statement, the meeting deliberated extensively on management matters, issues of national importance and “noted with serious concern the continued spate of protests by the members of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) in the South-East and South-South states agitating for a Biafra Republic. The issue of Biafra was settled in 1970 after the civil war.
“ It is therefore sad and unfortunate that 45 years after, when Nigerians are now united in a democratic system of governance, some elements are now busy instigating the innocent youth in the south eastern states to an irresponsible protest, which in most cases have degenerated into violence with serious consequences on the lives and property of innocent and law abiding Nigerians.
“ACF once more calls upon the Igbo youth and indeed other Nigerians to channel their energy, resources, talent and time into useful ventures that will promote unity and development rather then allow themselves to be used for such futile agitation.
“ACF also commends the efforts of some Governors, traditional rulers and elder statesmen both from the North and South for their intervention to douse the tension created by this unwarranted protest that could have some ripple effect in other parts of the country.”
The statement further said, the meeting also expressed concern on the alarming rate of kidnapping of innocent persons for ransom by some unknown gunmen in various parts of the country and urged the security agencies to redouble their effort in arresting the perpetrators of this unholy crime and bring them to justice.
